This sounds like the bug fixed in initrd-tools 0.1.75. I'm suprised that you were able to work around it by modifying the root= parameter. Anyway, you could verify that it's fixed by upgrading to the new initrd-tools, putting back the old menu.lst, and rebuilding your initrd. -- see shy jo
