you're right about the /var/*/docs, that should be
/var/.*/docs/

All these expression are posix compliant regular expression. And
/proc/ is a valid expression meaning just /proc/.

the documentation concercing these expression could be better than the
current few lines in the manual page. But, alas, there are only 24
hours in a day :)
