Actually I was thinking of note 1; Evergreen and later chipsets all require WITH_NEW_XORG, and are supported only since version 10 kernel which implies having significantly different code. I'm guessing, initially, there will be some cutoff between older/newer cards, older cards having the regression you described, and newer cards falling back in the convenient way I describe, with the potential to get KMS working easily. I may try to find/borrow various models of Radeon card to test.
