The syntax is: set kFreeBSD.foo=bar where foo would be the name of a loader.conf variable. You can set these at boot time with the 'e' edit option of GRUB, or more permanently by editing a grub.d script as per: http://wiki.debian.org/Debian_GNU/kFreeBSD_FAQ#Q._How_do_I_configure_grub_to_pass_a_parameter_to_the_kernel.3F You might also be able to get some more verbose output leading up to the crash, by appending the "-v" flag to the end of the "kfreebsd /path/to/kfreebsd.gz" line. A much easier thing to try first might be `apt-get install kfreebsd-image-8-amd64`, select it from the GRUB menu on a warm reboot and see if that can boot whereas kfreebsd-9 doesn't.
