ISTR when I added the TERM=xterm-new advice it was only as a "just in case" warning. I just installed a Debian chroot in my FreeBSD VM and verified that it's not needed, at least for normal use of backspace / delete in emacs, nano and zile. No problem then, thanks for warning us.
