Having it on /proc/cmdline is good enough for grub-installer to include the console on the kernel command line. However it only works if you have "--" before "console=" on the installer's kernel command line, it took me a while to figure that out! Since I worked out the "--" thing I haven't re-investigated the getty issue, it's possible it is fixed because of that change to but I don't think so. I also need to figure out how this will interact with pvfb support when that becomes available in the kernel (it's in 2.6.26).
