Comments/Problems:
The system booted just fine, but GRUB had bein configued with the following
at the top of /boot/grub/menu.lst:
serial --unit=0 --speed=19200 --word=console=ttyS0,19200 --parity= --stop=1
terminal serial
As the word and parity are not configured correctly GRUB still worked but
sent it's output to the attached monitor not to the serial port.
I changed the top line to:
serial --unit=0 --speed=19200 --word=8 --parity=no --stop=1
and GRUB then worked as expected.
