Probably a remainder from those good old days when we had both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. Though even then it did not really make a lot of sense as AFAIK we had things in different subdirs. I'd be in favor of removing the kernel versions in names. Main issue is to avoid breaking debian-cd (hppa/sparc). Maybe if we do this change we could at the same time: - standardize the directory layout for images across arches - remove remaining 2.6 subdirs (or make them standard for all images) - add the arch by default in the image path for daily builds (i.e. /d-i/images/<arch>/...) so that one person can safely build multiple arches ?
