Okay, that is hopefull. ( as in "squid should work" ( some proxies do demand authentication software that is not available in d-i )) My advice is to press ALT-F2 to get the console at vt2. Next thing is to find out if it possible to get with the tool `wget` the file http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dists/etch/Release. That way you check various proxysetting faster, you also will see more low level information from the proxy.
