ok so can you test the complete install and it seems to be a syslinux bug ?i think you have to find the first version of syslinux which does not work from sarge to etch
you can do that by using snapshot.debian.net: apt line for this package: deb http://snapshot.debian.net/archive pool syslinux deb-src http://snapshot.debian.net/archive pool syslinux then, you can install specific version of package as follows: apt-get install binary-package=version
