Hello,
(Sorry if any of the people in CC receives this mail twice; I didn't know if
any of you are listed on Debian-boot).
Recently a new version of ppp-udeb has entered Debian unstable and now is
included in the daily D-I images. This version of ppp-udeb should allow
configuration of PPPoE connections directly from the D-I environment and has a
lot of significant improvements over the older versions.
Since it is likely that this version will be the one included on the
installation images, it would be good to have feedback (both positive and
negative, if any :-D) and tests related to PPPoE.
How to test:
1. Download a businesscard ISO image appropriate for your architecture[1]
People on i386 architecture should download this image:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-businesscard.iso
2. At the boot prompt type append "anna/choose_modules=ppp-udeb" after the
method (expert, expertgui) :
expert anna/choose_modules=ppp-udeb
This will make sure the module doing the PPPoE configuration will be loaded
and no additional handwork will be necessary.
Note: Unfortunately, for yet an unknown reason for which the main-menu skipps
over the PPPoE menu item, so expert mode must be used, or one must go back to
the main menu and select the relevant menu entry after the additional
components if normal mode is used ("install anna/choose_modules=ppp-udeb" is
typed at the boot prompt).
3. Follow the regular steps in configuration (you will have to manually select
the items in the main menu and follow the steps below if you used the boot
line with expert):
* Choose language, country, locales, additional locales (you can go with the
defaults, localization is not relevant for this test)
* Select a keyboard layout
* Detect and mount CDROM (go with the defaults; you can start PC card
services, then go with the defaults until you get back to the main menu)
* Load installer components from CD (do not change the defaults)
* Detect network components
* !!! go up one item and select the "Configure and start a PPPoE connection"
step !!!
The PPPoE detection will start.
4. Provide the correct login information for PPPoE[*].
5. PPPoE should be configured and the installer should be able to use it to
connect to the internet. You can raise the debconf priority now and continue
the installation.
[*] Unfortunately, at the moment, if the wrong login information is
introduced, the module does not handle this error (the connection will not be
made but the user is not informed that the wrong information was provided). I
hope this will be fixed in the near future.
[1] The businesscard image is the smallest image that contains the ppp-udeb
module which is responsible for PPPoE configuration. In other words, this is
the smallest image that can provide PPPoE configuration from the D-I
environment. Larger images should be able to do the right thing, too.
