First sign during installation is when it tries to DHCP to configure the network and can't. Kernel messages (dmesg) say the card is found, it loads the 3c59x module and overall looks good but the NIC is unresponsive when actually accessed. NIC is 3Com 3c900B. This seems to be an issue with kernels 2.6.12 and later configuring this card on this machine as earlier kernels work just fine whether as an installer, complete installed debian, knoppix etc. Went into the archives and tried etch-beta2 and etch-beta3. The normal install fails the same way. Using "install24", ie kernel 2.4, works beautifully. This option not available in etch-rc1.
