D-I pre-RC1 test (2006-10-17) These are my notes/ideas after having done a test installation using the graphical d-i. (Under a VMware install using my ISP mirror)
I'm not subscribed to the list so please cc me on anything you'd like my
comment on. I'm happy to test any betas etc to see how things may have
improved.
-- Would be nice to have a menu (Ubuntu like) for basic boot options (or
to list the GUI option straight out)
-- Memtest on the CD adds just a few hundred Kb and is a nice extra
feature (Although I'd assume only on the bigger images)
-- Still needs a bootsplash/usplash/something for default GUI
-- Needs version on header image (even if "Prerelease" or snapshot)
-- *Useless* with the current partitioner
-- A double-click on an entry in the list view doesn't execute the option
-- For single checkbox option pages (eg "Really use block device
encryption") should have a yes/no or more gnome-style ("use
encryption"/cancel)
-- Still needs a global progress bar (even if it's a bad estimate that
only works for default options)
-- D-I needs a password widget (er, seems to have one, the crypto lvm
just doesn't use it)
-- have to confirm partition changes too many times (try a guided crypto
lvm install)
-- no progress information after mirror selection, just blank screen, on
slow links [non-Ethernet]) could take long enough for people to assume
failure
-- Crypto LVM could use a better prompt then "Enter LUKS passphrase"
Many issues from my earlier post
(http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2005/12/msg00102.html) are still
relevant notably:
2. Country choice, maybe a map with highlights would be nice. (Something
along the lines of anaconda)
3. It seems that you cannot use keyboard shortcuts in lists (eg mirror
list), this forces use of the mouse.
4. Would be nice to have a download speed monitor at the bottom of the
screen for those with slow connections, also a calculated ETA.
7. No obvious way to cancel out of creating a new user account (I know
that the "go back" button is probably the cancel button from the console
installer, but would still be nice to have it there). For people who run
LDAP/NIS/etc creating an additional local user account is not just a
waste of time in installation, it may need to be manually removed after
installation.
8. The installer should give warnings about insecure root/user passwords
9. Would be nice if the main download ran as:
