Comments/Problems:
I have a Senao Prism 2.5 PCMCIA wireless network card (which, at my current location, is my only way of connecting to the internet). This card uses the hostap_cs driver. The Debian install could not detect this network card because it lacks the pcmciautils package!
My fresh minimal install was worthless until I found another computer, manually downloaded the pcmciautils .deb, copied it to my USB memory stick, copied it from my USB memory stick to this thinkpad laptop and did a 'dpkg -i pcmciautils_014-1_i386.deb'. To let the hostap driver use its propper interface names I also edited /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-
net.rules to contain these two lines:
SUBSYSTEM=="net", KERNEL=="wifi*", DRIVER=="hostap*", SYSFS{address}=="00:02:6f:41:33:b8", NAME="wifi0"
SUBSYSTEM=="net", KERNEL=="wlan*", DRIVER=="hostap*", SYSFS{address}=="00:02:6f:41:33:b8", NAME="wlan0"
After that, everything worked pretty much flawlessly.
In short: please put the pcmciautils package on the netinstall CDs and let the installer automatically install where necessary, because a netinstall is obviously quite useless without functioning network interfaces. Thank you.
