Also, in general please actually measure the costly boot time. There were a number of calls to remove the depmod -a from the run-time init ramfs, until we actually timed it and figured out that it was almost immeasurably fast on a tmpfs. =) While it's generally true that it's important not to optimise without test data to measure against, many of the things that I expected to take alot of time just don't because everything is already in memory.
