That would be possible, but some patching of Makefile is required, as shown in this patchfile [0] for GTK 2.8.10 from DFB's CVS repository, where the GDKDFB project lived for many years before entering GTK mainline. Also, some bugfixes applied to the DFB backend after it was merged into GTK mainline should be backported. I just filed reports (and a patch) for two bugs [1][2] that currently prevent GTK 2.9.1 from compiling with the DFB backend. If GTK team fixes those bugs before GTK 2.9.2 is released, we could build the GTKDFB libraries without the need for patches to original source tarballs.
