No, it does bother me a bit - although as yet I havn't observed any unpleasant side effects. I tried changing the content of /etc/modprobe.d/libata to: options libata atapi_enabled=0 to see if this was a result of the CD being activated (vs something else different in my build) but the CD continued to be detected.. This scsi0 : ata_piix hda1 hda4 <<4>ATA: abnormal status 0x7F on port 0x14B7 ata2: disabling port scsi1 : ata_piix Vendor: MATSHITA Model: DVD-RAM UJ-832S Rev: 1.01 Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 05 hda5 hda6 hda7 hda8 hda9 hda10 hda11 hda12 hda13 hda14 hda15 > looks a bit like the hda tranfer failed until initialization of the CD initialization completed, when the partition list completed. I can't see anything else to indicate that DMA is not being used: fujitsu:/home/digbyt# grep dma /proc/ide/ide0/hda/settings using_dma 1 0 1 rw > You may be better of trying the 2.6.16 kernel from unstable. Can you give me a clue on how to do that? I assume I need to add entries for unstable to my /etc/apt/sources.list, but somehow avoid inadvertently mixing testing and unstable packages in the rest of my system.. Regards, DigbyT -- Digby R. S.
