Following up on this install report, this should NOT be counted as a successful install. Ultimately because of multple hardware issues between the CPU, motherboard and/or APIC subsystem (discussed in the link above) I had to return the computer. The final, fatal problem was that even after all hacks (boot with noapic, manually start dhclient) the network was operating at only about 3% normal speed. Every other ping packet took over 1 second to reply when it should have been <1ms. File transfers took ffffoooorrrreeeevvvveeeerrrrrr. At present I would NOT recommend the current line of HP or Compaq machines due to this apparent hardware compatibility design flaw. Linux should not be expected to work around this by shutting off half the features of the chipset (which I suppose is what HP's patch for WinBlow$ does)
