I tried again with the netinst image of 20060309, and it worked correctly. I did wait a little longer than I did under this bug report, but I'm not totally certain how impatient I was that night when the manual wasn't working. If you want me to probe more deeply, I could, but I'm satisfied now given that it worked with a later netinst image.
