For the curious, I thought I'd mention that the problems I was having getting d-i to build were solved (as expected) by reinstalling my workstation. I'm not 100% sure whether the problem was buildscript, or, in the process of trying to get buildscript to work that I managed to installed udebs. In any event it works now.
