Please also provide the output from 'lspci' and 'lspci -n' and 'lsmod' 
from your system now that it is running with the 2.4.27-1-686-smp kernel.

Does the system still not boot if you boot with the default kernel?
Are there any differences in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file for the default 
kernel and the 2.4.27-1-686-smp kernel?
