reopen 263137 thanks but no thanks I've reverted this change since it breaks display using any non-unicode capable terminal, which is most of them. Verified by three people, using four consoles. It's far too late to be making this kind of change without consulting anyone.
I suggest that you try passing TERM=linux on the kenrel command line if you boot from a serial console connected to a linux console. This should make the code path that you want run, while not breaking serial console installs for everyone else. -- see shy jo
