On subsequent thought, I do notice that the logs generated are quite large. Perhaps the VM problems were due to running out of memory because the ramdisk was full of log messages. This system had 64M. WRT the disklabel question, I really don't see a way to avoid prompting the user with the option of using disklabel versus DOS partitions, other than making disklabel the default on alpha, and then you still have to deal with drives that have resident DOS partition tables.
