They didn't appear. I looked at dmesg and didn't see any sign of controllers. So, I dropped to console on vt2 and manually did a: modprobe sata_promise dmesg showed the controller and drives recognized but the installer wouldn't pick up. Based on something I read on google, I rebooted, and at the first prompt for language, dropped to vt2 and installed the module with 'modprobe' This time, the drives were correctly found and easily partitioned. Other than that, the install went smoothly. This is probably already a fixed issue (since my iso is old but I didn't have any spare media around to try a new daily) but I wanted to mention it just in case.
