I thought about adding || [ -z "$DEBIAN_FRONTEND" ] but there are apparently some scripts in rootskel for s390 that export DEBIAN_FRONTEND; it's not clear to me how cdebconf would behave if DEBIAN_FRONTEND is set to one value and debconf/frontend to another. Guess it might be easier to change the docs to only document DEBIAN_FRONTEND.. -- see shy jo
