I just tried a new install with the defaults (english/NA IIRC), and this time, the screen gets corrupted in the middle of the boot process already (no readable switch to a smaller font) and stays that way when base-config is started. > > Graphics Adapter is > > 0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon > > Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500] > > > > I think I forget to report that previously. > > I have a similar radeon controller (Mobility 9000 M9) and recently > hotplug has begun to load radeonfb, which in the 2.4 kernel puts my > display in a very high res text mode too (but no screen corruption > here). It's hard to tell without a screenshot, I don't have a digicam, so doing a screenshot of the Linux console would be awkward. Basically, the characters seem to be roughly at the right position still, but the pixels get garbled so that everything is completely unreadable. > but maybe that's it.
