You may need to add 'devfs=mount root=/dev/ram' in the append line.
I guess that improved things. Now it can't find /var/lib/cdebconf/{questions,templates}.dat and is saying so repeatedly.
That's the 2.6 kernel.
I _think_ the 2.4 kernel's doing the same, but it's hard to tell with all the modprobe messages as before.
