When trying to install using either the 2.4 or the 2.6 kernel, the laptop locks up shortly after booting from the CD-ROM. The laptop is unresponsive and must be turned off.
This particular problem did not happen with beta4 (although there were other problems with respect to ide-cd under 2.6 and my wireless LAN PCMCIA card).
The last few boot message lines for the 2.4 kernel are: VFS: mounted root (ext2 filesystem). Trying to move old root to /initrd ... okay Mounted devfs on /dev Freeing unused kernel memory: 92k freed Setting up filesystem, please wait ... NET4: Unix domain sockets 1.0/SMP for Linux NET4.
The last few boot message lines for the 2.6 kernel are: VFS: mounted root (ext2 filesystem). Trying to move old root to /initrd ... okay Mounted devfs on /dev Freeing unused kernel memory: 200k freed Setting up filesystem, please wait ... NET: Registered protocol family 1
I also tried adding the boot parameters "noapic nolapic debian-installer/framebuffer=false" for both kernels and I got the same results.
