I overlooked this myself, until somebody pointed it out to me. Your problem could be related to mine. The root of my problem was actually the memory sticks. These were located in DIMM3 and DIMM4, but moving them to DIMM1 and DIMM2 helped and away went the initrd -> kernel panic problem.
