Hi Martin,
I am a bit of a neophyte in these matters but I do not think I can use a CD image because I do not have a CD burner.
That is why I use floppies.
Would that defeat the experiment?

Can you try a new image from http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sarge_d-i/ Although these are CD images; do you not have a CD drive? I'm off-line right now so I cannot check, but new floppy images should be in http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/unstable/debian-installer or something like that. Maybe you can try these.
