Can you please try a newer image from 
http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sarge_d-i/ to see if these
problems have been fixed?  GRUB and LILO should install just fine.

framebuffer works on most i386 machines, so turning it off by default
is probably a bad idea.  You should normally only have to type it
once, though.

There is a test to check whether the filesystem contains an existing
installation, but maybe there are some problems with it.  Can you try
to play around a bit with the new image and see if you can still break
it?  It should warn you about an existing system when you don't format
the partition and there's a system on it already.
