Can I assume that the testing comes in at least 3 flavours:

people to run through the installation in the easiest/normal way on
hardware which has worked ok with previous betas (to check for
  accidental breakage).

people to pound on it and take unusual paths through the installer
to show up obscure cases not spotted before.

people to try it on (more) unusual hardware to check that stuff is
  detected and works

So far I've only managed to test 2 of the betas and the first one was
on hardware which was already known not to work.

Is there a description of the minimum level of checks needed to be of
any real value?

Assuming that current issues for Alpha and sparc hardware are resolved
I should be able to offer to do simple tests of:

  x86 ; mostly old kit
        netboot
cdrom (well everyone can probably do these)

alpha ; a mix of old workstations
        netboot
cdrom (I hope one will still work)

sparc ; sun4m, sun4u (SBUS and PCI) -- none have CDs
        netboot
I could dig out an old sun4c if anyone cares.

We have some SGI mips machines though I plan to ditch them soon. I
don't think any we have left alive are IP22s (though I will check our
"big pile of kit waiting to be disposed of").

We have a couple of IA64 machines but I doubt that the users would be
happy to take them down for install-testing... :-)
