It's pretty likely that your network problems are caused by the new version of hotplug or something like that. Boot single user, bring up your system a peice at a time, and figure out which bit is frying the network. Bring up the network manually and see what module needs to be loaded, what steps need to be done, and compare that with what the boot process does.
