/usr/sbin/mkinitrd: /dev/fd does not exist, mkinitrd failed

I got this error after compiling and then trying to install a new kernel
(2.6.4) on a working Debian Sid system.
I had previously (and successfully) done this.
Now I cannot boot, and trying to install ANY kernel, results in the same error
message.

I would really appreciate some pointers.
Thank you.
