In particular, it should suggest a sane default kernel. Currently the first kernel presented is kernel-image-2.6.0-test4-1-386 which is almost surely the wrong choice. Could the installer detect the number and type of CPUs and use that to suggest the default? Something like "Here are all the available kernels. Based on your detected hardware configuration the best choice appears to be 2.4-386". (I realize that UMP vs SMP is an important difference. But do all the 686, K6, K7 kernels really result in noticeable peformance differences?) --Andre --------------------------------------- Received: (at 214441-done) by bugs.debian.org; 16 Mar 2004 04:17:47 +0000 >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Mar 15 20:17:47 2004 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from kitenet.net [64.62.161.42] (postfix) by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1B361T-0000Re-00; Mon, 15 Mar 2004 20:17:47 -0800 Received: from dragon.kitenet.net (dial174.pm3bloun1.bloun.naxs.com [216.98.69.174]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "Joey Hess", Issuer "Joey Hess" (verified OK)) by kitenet.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0979717DFC for <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Tue, 16 Mar 2004 04:17:46 +0000 (GMT) Received: by dragon.kitenet.net (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 8FCC76E118; Mon, 15 Mar 2004 23:17:08 -0500 (EST) Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2004 23:17:08 -0500 From: Joey Hess <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: done long ago Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="C7zPtVaVf+AK4Oqc" Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.5.1+cvs20040105i Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_12 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-2.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00 autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_12 X-Spam-Level: --C7zPtVaVf+AK4Oqc Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable base-installer has chosen smp kernels on i386 by the method arrived at by this bug's thread for a long time. --=20 see shy jo --C7zPtVaVf+AK4Oqc Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: Digital signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAVn/Ed8HHehbQuO8RAlYsAKCBWZ45tnv4fasmfG8BaCte8uc8OwCgiBne hbrNNjb/LXtLJt12r074jc8= =Z9fQ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --C7zPtVaVf+AK4Oqc-- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
