One additional point I forgot to mention: Immediately after installation, /boot/grub/menu.lst had two entries -- a normal one and a recovery mode -- which were identical. After I did apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade to upgrade to sid and then installed a newer kernel image, update-grub (I assume) corrected the problem and added "single" to the recovery mode menu item. I am not reporting a bug against update-grub or anything else since the problem does not seem to relevant after debian-installer is finished. Perhaps the version of update-grub on my install image is bad. I haven't made any effort to do additional diagnosis.
