Package: installation-reports Debian-installer-version: Beta 2, downloaded 1/22/2004 from http://people.debian.org/cdimage/testing/netinst/i386/beta2/sarge-i386-netin st.iso and http://people.debian.org/cdimage/testing/netinst/i386/beta2/sarge-i386-busin esscard.iso uname -a: Installation failed. Date: 1/23/2004 Method: Tried both business card and netinstaller. Both failed with the same problem, seemingly.
Machine: Attempted Debian Install to a VMWare VM. Host OS is Windows XP SP1. A previous Debian install (with bootfloppies) *was successful* in this VM. Processor: Athlon 2500+ Memory: 1 gig total, 256 megs allocated to VM. Root Device: VMWare gave it 10 gigs of a virtual IDE disk. Root Size/partition table: ~500 megs swap, ~10 gigs root partition. Output of lspci: Didn't get this far. Base System Installation Checklist: Initial boot worked: [X] Configure network HW: [X] Config network: [X] Detect CD: [X] Load installer modules: [X] Detect hard drives: [X] Partition hard drives: [X] Create file systems: [X] Mount partitions: [X] Install base system: [E] Install boot loader: [E] Reboot: [ ] [O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it Comments/Problems: First I tried the business card .iso. It seemed to install the base system correctly. After choosing a kernel, however, it would return me to choosing the kernel again and again. Attempts to choose later options (finish configuration and reboot, etc) would again return me to the "choose your kernel" screen. Each time, it looked as if the kernel was copied and configured correctly. No errors on tty3 or 4. Next, I tried the netinst image. It got through partitioning without a problem, but base config failed, with lots of errors on tty4. None on tty3. Tty4 is showing a lot of dependency errors. I cannot scroll up. While the installer tells me that all errors are logged to /target/var/log/debootstrap.err.log, the file is empty. Good luck, guys. The hardware detect is very nice.
