I've just nearly successfully installed in vmware using 2.4.24 d-i. The only catch is that the CD image I had it use after booting from floppy does not have the 2.4.24 kernel deb on it and is lacking a few kernel module udebs too. But I see no problems at all that cannot be explained by that. All initrds build and fit with the new kernel, etc.
The 2.4.24 kernel udebs are in the archive so it's a trivial change to build your own initrds. I might throw together some CD images if that would be useful for testing. -- see shy jo
