I think that Thomas has something about vesafb not working as a module. d-i first modprobes it, but at least here (in vmware), it fails to load with a "no such device or address". So d-i then proceeds to load vga16fb which does not get along with this laptop.
Just looked at vesafb source again - it doesn't even have a module_init() function. So it DOES NOT (and CANNOT) work as a module.
