FWIW, LVM tends to get pissy if it's compiled with devfs, but not mounted. It'll let you pvcreate extents, but will refuse to believe they are valid when you try to add them to a VG, as I recall. I'll see if I can grab a blank harddrive and do a test install sometime tonight to test this.
