Package: base-config Version: 2.00 While upgrading passwd, I was notified that base-config is now a dependency of passwd. While deciding whether to install base-config or get rid of passwd, I read the package description of base-config and noticed, "It can be removed with no ill effects". Well, if I upgraded and then removed base-config, passwd would be removed as well. The passwd package is, however, essential for my system.
My suggestion is: Remove the line "It can be removed with no ill effects". Add the line, "However, this package can not be safely removed." at the end of the description. It also strikes me that the package is misclassified. It makes no sense that a required package (passwd) should depend on an optional package (base-config).
