Im not sure how the current debian-installer net config co-operates with the post install net config, so i may be stating the obvious...
busybox has an ifupdown applet, so debian-installer could generate an /etc/network/interfaces file, run 'ifup -a', and if the network doesnt come up repeat the process. Generating the /etc/network/interfaces could be similar to the current static net config i imagine, for the simpler levels it could generate an interfaces file that defaults to dhcp. Once a correct /etc/network/interfaces is generated it can be copied to the install target to be used post install.
