Chris That seemed to be the solution. I re-jigged the partition sizes on the hard drive, and pointed root to /dev/hda5, and we were off and running. System was successfully installed. Now on to bigger and better things.
(Had just previously successfully installed Knoppix to the hard drive, with instructions provided by a colleague, so it had to be something like that.) Thanks. Could you repeat the install once more, and after the problem comes up, choose the 'Problem Report' menu item, and send the resulting dbg_log.tgz to the list? ----- End forwarded message ----- OK, it looks like your boot partition is /dev/hda1, and your target partition is also /dev/hda1. Since that partition only has 10M in it, you're running out of space. It looks like /dev/hda5 is your intended root, you need to mount that one when it asks, before starting the installation.
