Given what I've learned about the expectations of other parts of the recovery system's expectations for the contents of target I'd like to refine my opinion that the contents of /target should be the selected subvolume and not the root subvolume. It's not optimal from my point of view but it is certainly workable and maximum compatibility with the rest of the system should be respected. I'd love to see a fix for this in Trixie! I'm also eagerly awaiting a build of the installer to test out. Thanks everyone for giving this bug attention.
