The daily live images started to fail to run the graphical installer with

The X environment is no longer started.

Note: The live images build the Debian installer from source.

Maybe you could be more specific? That's rather vague and if I look
into live-build-install_to_HD_with_di, I see d-i starting, except in
text mode.

That is my point. It does not start the graphical mode, like it did the day before.

I've done a bit more digging:

* There is no /var/log/Xorg.0.log being generated.

I've now looked at differences in /var/lib/dpkg/status, and the difference I see are:
* cdebconf (et al) from 0.274 to 0.275
* ca-certificates-udeb from 20240203 to 20241223
* udev from 257.1-3 to 257.1-4

The latter two don't seem relavant for this case, the first one got uploaded to sid within the mentioned time window.

I'll try to generate an installer image with the old cdebconf, to see whether that helps.

On the d-i side, if the graphical installer fails to start, we get X
starting in a loop (see recent bug reports until the fix in the X
server), there's no fallback to text mode.

Without any more information, that looks like some live problem…

The live installer runs 'daily-build' from the debian-installer repository. The generated initrd.gz was then started with qemu:

kvm -kernel build/dest/cdrom/gtk/vmlinuz -initrd build/dest/cdrom/gtk/initrd.gz -m 2G

With kind regards,
Roland Clobus
