The first line setting protocol to ftp is commented out, so it's not actively used. It shows a possible custom setting. The used default value is http. I should be understandable from the introduction at https://d-i.debian.org/doc/installation-guide/en.amd64/apbs04.html#preseed-partman that 'd-i partman-auto/init_automatically_partition select biggest_free' or 'd-i partman-auto/disk string /dev/sda' or similar only point to space on one of your harddisks, which you want to use for the Debian installation. How it is used in detail, is defined further below, like: - which method (regular, lvm, crypto) - which recipe (atomic, home, multi - or own recipes) and further specs like filesystems or mountpoints.
