Other desktop tasks, such as task-xfce-desktop avoid bothering the user about this, despite depending upon lightdm in XFCE's case, so they presumably avoiding pulling gdm3 in during the install. It certainly can (so I closed it here) since it was caused by an error in my test scripting, as can be seen here: https://openqa.debian.net/tests/10133#step/choose_software/3 Note that it has deselected the 'Debian Desktop Environment' option (rather than what I intended it to do: deselect 'Gnome') with the result that it installs both desktops, and thus pulls in both display managers.
