Same here on a Thinkpad T60. Interestingly, when I plug in a second usb stick or my usb backup harddisk (it seems that any usb data storage does the trick), the built-in harddisk gets detected! Removing the second usb storage makes the build-in harddisk disappear again here!! (Found this out, because I was prompted for firmware for my wlan module.)
