Well, it doesn't, and most users are aware of that. DTRT is hard. It's almost impossible when hardware is part of the equation. Debian is good, but will for example fail to install support for 3G/LTE modems if you happen to select the LXDE task, because lxde recommends wicd | network-manager-gnome Just one example where a user will have to look for packages supporting their specific hardware after installation. I'm sure there are plenty of similar edge cases. Users expect it and act accordingly. The existense of an "obsolete" package like xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, with no indication that it is obsolete, is therefore a problem. As shown by this completely unnecessary bug and discussion.
