I forgot to mention that when the installer asked for a mirror, it can't find one with the daily files, so it uses sid-unstable instead.
when it stalls, with the hard drive still busy (I can hear it), on ctrl-alt-F4 it displays a log. the last 4 lines being: pkgsel: starting tasksel in-target: Reading package lists... in-target: in-target: Building dependency tree... on ctrl-alt-F2, I type ps, the last line says: apt-get - o APT::Status-Fd=4 -o APT::Keep-Fds::5 -o ......
